What is a Gotra?
A gotra identifies your patrilineal descent from one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages). It is used in Hindu rituals, marriage matching (same gotra = brothers/sisters in Vedic law), and sacred ceremonies. The pravara lists the 3 to 5 most distinguished ancestors in your lineage.

Gotra — The Lineage System
Gotra traces patrilineal descent from one of the ancient rishis — Bharadwaja, Kashyapa, Atri, Vashishtha and others. Traditionally, marriage within the same gotra is avoided, and the gotra is recited in every sankalpa before puja, shraddha and samskaras, identifying the family before the deity. Each gotra carries associated pravaras (lineage sages). If you do not know your gotra, family elders or the family priest’s records usually hold it — this finder explains the major gotras and their rishis.
