sukhasadane śaśivadane ambe mṛganayane |
gajagamane suranamane kolhāpuramathane |
suravara varṣati sumaneṃ karuniyāṃ namaneṃ |
bhayaharaṇe sukhakaraṇe suṃdarī śivaramaṇe || 1||
jaya devī jaya devī vo jaya ambe |
kolhāpurādhisvāmiṇi tuja vo jagadambe || dhṛ ||
mṛgamadamiśrita keśara śobhata teṃ bhāḻīṃ |
kuṃcita keśa virājita muguṭāṃtūna bhāḻīṃ |
ratnajaḍita suṃdara aṃgī kāṃcoḻī |
cidgagaganācā gābhā ambā velhāḻī || jaya || 2||
kaṃṭhī vilasata saguṇa muktā suviśeṣeṃ |
pītāṃbara suṃdara kasiyelā kāṃse |
kaṭitaṭi kāṃcī kiṃkiṇi dhvani maṃjuḻa bhāse |
padakamaḻa lāvaṇye ambā śobhatase || jaya || 3||
jhaḻajhaḻajhaḻajhaḻa jhaḻakati tānavaḍeṃ karṇī |
tejā lopuni gele raviśaśi nija karaṇīṃ |
brahmaharihara sakaḻika neṇati tava karaṇī |
adbhuta līlā lihitāṃ na pure hī dharaṇī || jaya || 4||
aṣṭahi bhūjā suṃdara śobhatase |
jhagajhagajhagajhagajhagati lāvaṇyagābhā |
mhagamhagamhagamhagamhagīta samanāṃcī śobhā |
tryambaka madhukara hoūni varṇitase ambā || 5||

About this aarti — Durga

An Aarti is a song of worship sung while waving a lit lamp (diya) before the deity. The circling flame symbolises the removal of darkness and the offering of one’s ego at the feet of the divine. Aartis are sung at the end of puja in temples and homes across India, and their familiar melodies mark the rhythm of daily worship.

How to chant

Light a ghee or oil lamp on a small plate (thali), optionally with flowers, incense and akshata (rice grains). Sing the aarti while slowly circling the lamp clockwise before the deity. Afterwards, cup your hands over the flame, touch your eyes and forehead, and share prasad with everyone present.
