The son of Shiva and Vishnu (in Mohini form), deity of the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. Pilgrims undertake a 41-day austerity before climbing the sacred hill. The Makaravilakku festival at Makar Sankranti is his main celebration. He represents the unity of Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions.
Worship of Lord Ayyappa — Puja, Vrat & Offerings
Lord Ayyappa of Sabarimala is worshipped through one of the most disciplined observances in Hinduism — the 41-day Mandala vratham of austerity, celibacy, black clothing and twice-daily prayer, culminating in the pilgrimage to His shrine. Devotees chant "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" and wear the tulsi or rudraksha mala throughout the vow. Saturdays and the Makara Jyothi day in mid-January are especially sacred to Him.
