Shraddha & Tarpan — Honouring Ancestors

Shraddha is the ritual offering to departed ancestors (pitrs), performed on the death tithi each year and collectively during Pitru Paksha, the sixteen-day fortnight before Navratri. Tarpan — water offering with black sesame and kusha grass — is offered facing south, and Brahmins are fed in the ancestors’ names. The rites express gratitude and are believed to bring peace to the departed and blessings to the family line. Find the corresponding Pitru Paksha observance for a known death tithi here.
