What is Panchang?

Panchang (पञ्चांग) literally means “five limbs” in Sanskrit — pancha (five) + anga (limb). It is the Vedic Hindu almanac that captures the five celestial elements that define the quality and character of each day. For thousands of years, devout Hindus have consulted the daily Panchang before scheduling weddings, puja ceremonies, business launches, travel, or any significant life event.

Today's Panchang is calculated using precise astronomical data — planetary positions, lunar phase, and solar timing — and adjusted for your geographic location. No two days have the same Panchang, and no two cities experience identical Rahukaal or sunrise timings.

Sankalpa Guru's Panchang engine uses Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsha, the same standard used by the Government of India's National Almanac, ensuring accuracy to the minute for any latitude and longitude worldwide.

The Five Elements of Today's Panchang

Tithi

तिथि

The Hindu lunar day — one of 30 phases of the Moon in a month. Tithis govern the energy of the day and are classified as Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta, or Purna based on their number.

Nakshatra

नक्षत्र

The lunar mansion — one of 27 star clusters the Moon passes through. Each Nakshatra has a ruling deity, planet, and qualities that shape the day's character.

Yoga

योग

The planetary combination formed by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 Yogas, ranging from highly auspicious (Siddhi, Amrita) to inauspicious (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti).

Karana

करण

Half of a Tithi — each Tithi contains two Karanas. There are 11 Karanas (4 fixed, 7 movable) and they govern activities started within that half-day period.

Vara

वार

The weekday, ruled by a specific planet. Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).

Auspicious Muhurat Timings in Today's Panchang

A Muhurat is a time window of approximately 48 minutes considered highly auspicious for a specific type of activity. Classical Vedic texts prescribe different Muhurtas for marriage, travel, business, healing, and spiritual practice. Today's Panchang highlights these key Muhurtas:

Brahma Muhurta

96 min before sunrise

Best for: Meditation, study, spiritual practice

Abhijit Muhurta

Midday ±24 min

Best for: Starting new ventures, important decisions

Vijaya Muhurta

Afternoon

Best for: Travel, competitions, legal matters

Amrit Kaal

Varies daily

Best for: All auspicious activities

How to Use Today's Panchang in Daily Life

  1. Check the Tithi — if today is Ekadashi, Pradosh, Amavasya, or Purnima, plan devotional activities accordingly.
  2. Note the Nakshatra — some Nakshatras are ideal for travel (Hasta, Pushya), others for starting new work (Rohini, Shravana).
  3. Avoid Rahukaal — check the Rahukaal timing for today and do not begin new ventures or travel during this window.
  4. Use Choghadiya — select an Amrit, Shubh, or Labh Choghadiya block for starting important tasks.
  5. Plan pujas around the Abhijit Muhurta (midday) for maximum spiritual benefit.
