The Hindu god of war and victory, son of Shiva and Parvati. He carries a vel (spear) and rides a peacock. He is the general of the divine army who defeated the demon Soorapadman. Murugan is especially revered in Tamil Nadu where Thaipusam and Panguni Uttaram are celebrated in his honour.

Lord Murugan (Kartikeya, Subramanya), the warrior son of Shiva, is beloved especially in Tamil Nadu. Tuesdays, Shashti tithi, and the festivals of Thai Poosam and Skanda Shashti are sacred to Him. Devotees undertake the Kavadi offering and observe the Shashti fast for courage, victory over adversity and the well-being of children. Chanting "Om Saravanabhavaya Namah" and the Kanda Shashti Kavacham invokes His protection.
